We’re looking to hire an intern to work with Cipher. We’re open to applications from LGBTQIA+ people who are looking to get an insight into the publishing industry.

  • 8 hours a week at London Living Wage of £11.95

  • Paid at the end of each month in a freelance capacity

  • A five-month position, starting in April 2023

  • Remote work possible, but we’d like someone who is able to travel to our office in East London on occasion to help us pack up books

 

Your tasks will include:

  • Submitting our titles for prizes

  • Helping with mailouts

  • Reading submissions

  • Proofreading our newsletters and marketing materials, such as Advance Information Sheets

  • Helping make sure our databases are up to date

  • Checking our title pages on online retailer websites

  • Helping us with our social media where needed

  • Helping us plan launches and events

  • Any other tasks as needed

 

We’re keen to work with someone who would like to learn more about independent publishing and how the book industry works. On top of your daily tasks, Jack and Ellis will offer mentoring to help you get to grips with publishing processes, and we hope this experience will go some way towards allowing you a foot in the door of the wider industry in a more permanent role.

 

We’re looking to work with someone who is enthusiastic about Cipher’s mission to amplify the voices of queer and trans writers, and enjoys the kind of literature we publish. Previous publishing experience isn’t necessary. We’re especially keen to hear from queer and trans people of colour. .

 

Person Specification:

  • Organised

  • Good attention to detail

  • Copywriting & Communication skills

  • Passionate about queer and trans literature

  • Experience using Excel, Word etc

  • Interest in the book industry and the general publishing landscape
