In August of next year it will be four years since we published our first book - wild! This makes us still a baby in the world of publishing, but we’re so proud of what Cipher has become over the past four years - and this is all down to readers like you. Last year was our best yet; we toured around the country with our authors, did a festival (!), got shortlisted for the Goldsmith’s Prize, nominated for Small Press of the Year, and sold loads of incredible queer and trans books. We’re so grateful to everyone who came to our events, bought, read, and shared our titles.
As ever, we’re busy making plans for our future and are looking forward to growing Cipher over the coming years, to publishing more queer and trans writing, to finding new authors. To help us along the way, we’re renewing our subscription model for our 2024 list. By subscribing, you can get your mits on all six books we’re publishing throughout 2024, fresh from the printer.
Why we’re doing this
If you follow any indie publishers on Twitter, you probably already know that we’re up against some real challenges. Print costs continue to rise, review space is scarce, and there is still… Amazon. We’re constantly planning ahead to try and lessen the impact. Buying direct from publishers and pre-ordering our books makes such a huge difference – not only does it help contribute towards future print runs, but we’re able to pay our authors better royalties, and commission more titles.
We’re also just really excited to be part of the ever-growing queer lit scene in the UK, and we hope this subscription will develop into a community of readers and writers championing queer and trans authors and the books they write.
How it works
A 2024 Cipher Press Subscription costs £85 for UK readers, and £130 for overseas.* For that, you’ll get every book we’re publishing this year, an eBook of each, all our merch.
That £85 (or £130 for overseas) is less than if you buy our books individually and covers the cost of postage. It’s a one-off cost – we’ll be renewing the subscription each year as a one-time payment, so you can choose whether you want to continue or not.
For 2024, we’ve had to put costs up - this is because we’re publishing an extra book next year, because the cost of printing books generally has increased, and because postage costs have risen.

As well as our books, you’ll get any postcards, bookmarks, badges, posters, and any other weird things we make to go with them.

*We’re really sorry we’re still not able to ship books to the EU due to VAT changes as a result of Brexit, but we promise we are constantly looking for solutions to this and will update you as soon as we come up with something.
